Sometimes (all of the time?) it feels like It’s really hard to schedule a group to play.
One such night i wanted to try out a beginner friendly adventure (spoiler alert – now I use that adventure as one of my go-tos for introducing new players into the game!). Although several friends were ‘maybes’, it ended up that only two showed up virtually at the time.
Instead of scrapping the game, I decided to roll on with only myself as the DM and just two players!
It wasn’t exactly sure how it would go, since in my mind and years of experience, most groups would cancel is there were fewer than 4 players avail. I had played with three several times and those were surprisingly fun since each player gets more spotlight. The challenge of combat and problem solving were fun as well, even though the scenarios were ostensibly balanced for four +
Apparently it just takes a bit of DM attention, experience, common sense, and to check in with how the players are doing and if you’re maintaining the balance between challenge and accomplishment
So the two player game
I was surprised to discover :
We agree able to complete the adventure.
Each player got max spotlight, while having enough to bounce off from their partner.
Although the adventure happened to be combat light, I barely had to make any adjustments. I relied on my intuition to check how it was going for players
Conclusion, it went great! So much so that I thought about it and realized that there are several advantages for the players in a two-character party in a game of D&D.
How often have you been sitting at home with your spouse or roommate on a Tuesday night, looking for something easy and fun to do together? Getting dressed up to go out sounds like a lot. Collecting the squad to get a game night going is nearly impossible – especially without weeks of advance notice. Netflix que is down to the dregs. Maybe you’ve tried D&D before, but neither of you knows how to DM and anyway, you don’t have enough people to play!
We’ve introduced Dynamic to solve exactly your situation! We are so confident that we made it into a core offering on the Dungeon Master of Ceremony Services portion of the website. Go to Services, choose Dynamic Duo Game Night In, book a night with your DM on the calendar, and pay for you and your partner. I’ll confirm with you all before game night.
